They gently related their story of purchasing it at the first '60's over in the little Singer shop in Apache Plaza, an ancient enclosed shopping center near Minneapolis. Apache Plaza endured a memorable tornado in 1984 and closed in 2004, before I moved to Minnesota but I've heard many stories about it. To them it was the sewing machine she always used for mending and hemming his trousers and he noticed that he was "vertically challenged."
Even though it looked okay, the handwheel wasn't moving a complete rotation and was sticking somewhere. I took out the needle and the bobbin case but it was not moving yet the bobbin case seemed strange. It had black crusty marks on it and I asked what had happened but neither of them understood. I figured I could puzzle it out and said I'd get it in working order in a week and they could return to pick it up. No problem since Lois said he had other trousers to wear. As they were walking out the door they said it had a situation but it was not much and got destroyed in "the flood." Lois looked at him quizzically and he explained about the leak in the pipes and the consequent water in the cellar. This was clue one.
As I took it apart, I could see that it was cared for and was in great shape so far as the gears and engine were concerned, only a little dull on the end of the exterior. What caused it to seize up? Rust from long ago that had built up on the shaft of the hook and the hook itself but had turned black with time. Scraping away it reveled the reddish rust underneath I could remove by massaging in Evaporust, sanding with emory cloth, and only sheer persistence. Cleaning the outside of the machine showed some mottling which was below the dirt around the top, probably more exposure to the moisture compared to the other parts. The stickers were quite nice and the bed cleaned up well but had been used with several dings on its surface but it was supposed to be used! This only goes to show you one man's usefulness is another man's treasure. For Lois, this was her trusty little sewing machine which was handy but old and she should consider an upgrade. Now I could have easily talked her into a different sewing machine and taken her in as a transaction. That would be unethical as this was really repairable and resale could be excellent. If you're a regular reader of Sewing Machine Mavin I hope you know I would not do that! It is going back home with Lois and will enjoy a lot more years of repairs but she may not drop it off at Goodwill when they downsize but consider selling it or giving it to a beloved grandchild. She does have my business card, just in case.
